Books & manuscripts

Thus, were born the libraries, and with them the book and manuscript auctions, which gather ancient and modern books, letters, autographs, maps and postcards.
"A book is someone. Don't trust it. A book is a gear," wrote Victor Hugo. From books of hours - those manuscripts richly illuminated with azure and gold - to the works of surrealists André Breton and Paul Eluard, the jewels of the auctions are first editions on "large paper" with three cardinal values: period binding, prestigious provenance and "dispatch", in other words, a dedication by the author.
Collectors compete for manuscripts and letters by the poets of the day - Baudelaire, Verlaine and Rippe - autographs by Proust, travel books and maps. But the online auctions also focus on the ninth art with luxury editions and first editions of comic books by the old trio: Hergé, Franquin, Uderzo and Goscinny. We will also find albums and original plates of the young artists: Hugo Pratt, Moebius and Enki Bilal... a nice bubble of air!

The first edition, newly edited by Wickram, was published in 1556. Some of the beautiful woodcuts here are based on Brant's Ship of Fools, others are taken from the first edition of 1512, some with the monogram of Urs Graf (Hollstein XI, 268-286 attributes a total of 19 woodcuts in the first edition to Graf). Like Sebastian Brant in his "Ship of Fools", Murner also attacks the cardinal sins of the Middle Ages: Lust, profligacy, arrogance, avarice, envy, anger and laziness. Each poem (chapter) is preceded by a popular saying illustrated by a woodcut, followed by a summarizing quatrain. "Despite many motivic and compositional borrowings from the 'Ship of Fools', the 'Narenbeschwerung' is quite independent (even in the sharpness of its criticism, which seems to know no taboo, it goes far beyond Brant) and proves to be the work of a much more original author than Brant's artful compilation" (cf. Kindler). - Browned due to paper wear, but almost free of stains, lower corner of the title has been replaced (text and motif not affected), endpapers probably renewed. Overall a very well-preserved copy of this rare edition with splendid woodcut illustrations throughout in decorative binding. With woodcut title and 96 woodcuts. [DOMBES, Louis-Auguste de Bourbon] Le cuisinier gascon. Amsterdam [= Paris] s.n. 1740 In-12: [8]-208 pp. (uniformly lightly browned, rare marginal foxing). Red morocco, signed Chambolle-Duru, ribbed spine, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt fleuronné fillings, gilt on marbled boards (slight traces of mildew). Rare first edition of one of the most renowned cookery books of the 18th c., dedicated to the Prince of Dombes (1700-1755), "one of the best cooks in France" according to the author, who signs his name "le cuisinier gascon" and is said to be none other than the Prince himself. Grandson of Louis XIV and the Marquise de Montespan, appointed grand-veneur to the king in 1738, he was Louis XV's hunting companion. Both enjoyed exercising their culinary talents, with the prince acting as the king's kitchen boy. The book offers 217 recipes for appetizers and entremets, soberly described, from peasant inspiration to the most refined, where stews are often drenched in champagne and flavors highlighted by orange and lemon: poulets en culotte, en chauve-souris, à la caracatacat, yeux de veau farcis au gratin, barbe de chèvre, bignets (fritters) bachiques, sauces au singe vert, au bleu céleste, veau en crotte d'âne roulé à la Neuteau, jambes de boeuf ou de bois, hachis d'oeuf sans malice... There are also many detailed Italian recipes, not forgetting the legendary "gauffres à la flamande". Lyon, Anisson & Posuel, 1697, 2 works in 1vol. in-folio, speckled brown calf, finely decorated ribbed spine, fawn title page, lace on the edges, speckled edges, slight rest. and a few scattered russets. 1) 7 ff.n.ch., 424 pp. and 134 engraved figures. 2) 6 ff.n.ch., 172 pp. 2 ff.n.ch. (explanation of marine terms) and 11 folding plates out of text. Polak 4512. Sommervogel IV, 479-480. First edition of these two works, which should always be found together. Father Hoste's major work, marking the science of navigation, was translated into the languages of most European maritime nations. Paul Hoste, born in 1652 in Pont-de-Veyle, Ain, entered the Jesuits in September 1666. A gifted mathematician, he soon specialized in mathematical applications for the navy. Successively Royal Professor of Mathematics in Lyon and Toulon (where he died in 1700), he benefited, through the Duc de Mortemart, from the high protection of Marshals Jean d'Estrées and de Tourville. He made several sea voyages with them and accompanied them on their naval expeditions for twelve years, studying and codifying their maneuvers. French naval thought really took shape with the Traité des évolutions navales, written in close collaboration with these two illustrious marshals. It constitutes a vast synthesis of the naval tactics of the time, based on a study of the great naval battles since Lepanto. A good copy in contemporary binding. Handwritten bookplate on the title page. [Ref. 23879] The first treatise on naval tactics to be published in Europe

[HUGO (Victor)] Autograph working manuscript of L'Elégie des fléaux, excerpt from La Légende des siècles In French, autograph manuscript sheet on paper, brown ink S.l. [Paris (?) Victor Hugo returned to Paris in 1870], s.d. [circa 1875 (?)] Two small ink corrosion holes; text scratched with vertical and horizontal lines Size: 310 x 165 mm. This fragment belongs to the group of Victor Hugo's works sometimes referred to as "Copeaux", so named by the author himself. Once transferred and used, the author crossed them out and either archived or destroyed them. See: "J.-M. Hovasse, "Les copeaux de Victor Hugo", in Genesis: Manuscrits, Recherche, Innovation, no. 45 (2017), pp. 17-35: "For most of them were 'used', either in a more developed fragment or in a published work, and were then crossed out. Those that, for various reasons, in which chance plays a major role, have been saved, appeal to collectors and scholars alike, as they allow us to witness the birth of constituted ensembles, to get as close as possible to the origin of the creative work, and to sometimes allow a confrontation between a first draft and its final version". On the recto is an autograph fragment of the Légende des siècles (XXII, L'Elégie des fléaux, Nouvelle Série [Seconde série], Paris, Hetzel, 1877, pp. 297-299). Incipit: "Sous qui rampe la foule aux confuses rumeurs..." and explicit, "[...] D'où vient cette coloère odieuse des fleuves? So many crimes committed by the shadow! So many widows! How many orphans! Infamous massacre of innocents! La Légende des siècles is a collection of poems by Victor Hugo, written intermittently between 1855 and 1876, and published in three series (1859, 1877, 1883). A collective edition of the three series appeared in 1883. Verso: various autograph notes, less legible. Names of historical figures appear in La Légendes des siècles: Cambyses, Cyrus, Alexander, Annibal, Attila, Genghis...Caiaphas, Pico, Borgia, Torquemada....

He also revisited cuisine, later serving First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte, Talleyrand and foreign courts, before returning to Paris to work for Rothschild. "Robert John THORNTON - Temple of Flora or Garden of the Botanist, Poet, Painter and Philosopher Published by Dr. Thornton, London [Londres], 1812 - A magnificent copy of one of the most beautiful botanical books ever published, undoubtedly the most spectacular of its time, and its author's undisputed masterpiece. The work did not save its author from ruin, despite the lottery organized to remedy the situation. The illustration set includes an allegorical frontispiece engraved by Tomkins, 2 black & white engravings by Russell and Opie after Maddocks, and Reinagle after Bartolozzi and Landseer, 28 hand-colored aquatints by Pether, Thornton, Edwards, Reinagle & Henderson, after drawings by Dunkarten, Roffe, Gaugain, Quilley, Maddox, Burk, Maddan and Stadler. Complete with 31 plates, the aquatints include the roses, executed by the author himself with brio, and certainly among the most beautiful plates in the book. Each plate is accompanied by poetic excerpts in verse recounting the virtues and legends associated with each flower specimen presented: a true literary, botanical and artistic gem. Bound in strictly contemporary full calf, double framed in gilt fillets on the boards, accompanied by a frame of gilt lace, 5-ribbed spine decorated with gilt and cold motifs, title, place and date in gilt lettering, attractive gilt arabesque lace on the edges, some light rubbing to the jaws, minor blemishes to the corners, excellent overall condition nonetheless for this binding. Particularly fresh interior, almost totally free of foxing, sublimely printed on fine vellum paper. Large in-4, unpaginated (156pp). "" THE MOST SUMPTUOUS FLORILEGIUM OF ALL TIMES"" (Great Flower Books p.42) "" ... the most strikingly beautiful set of flower plates ever to be printed in England, one of the loveliest books in the world "" (Alan Thomas - Great Books and Book Collectors pp.142-4) Provenance: Library of Mr. Alexandre Christian Becker, Danish collector, with his bookplate".
