1924. woodcut in black and gold on wove paper. 35.2 x 35 cm (38.5 x 37 cm). Signed with the name in Polish script and titled "Philobiblon", Bücher des Verlages Philobiblon aus Warschau sind hier zu haben", dated by hand and inscribed with the printing instruction "gold muss als Ton deutlich erkennbar sein". - Slightly browned almost to the margins. One side with restored marginal tear. Localized water stains and a few surface soiling, also on verso. Traces of handling in places. Good overall. Excellent and very rich, clear impression with narrow margins, the gold shimmering velvety. Extremely rare. Proof sheet with registration marks in the margins, as a design for the poster design of the Warsaw publisher Philobiblon. - As a calligrapher, typographer and poster designer, Tschichold is one of the most important representatives of the New Typography. His visit to the Bauhaus with its approaches and aesthetics was a decisive influence. While a design draft for a letterhead for the same publishing house in 1923 reveals an even more classical approach (cf. German National Library Leipzig, inventory no.: 1236315111), Tschichold's visual language changes decisively in our design; it is reduced and modernized, functional. In 1924, the first works were created under the influence of the Bauhaus, e.g. our design for the poster of the Warsaw publishing house "Philobiblon". With his avant-garde approach, Tschichold founded the "New Typography", for which he still holds a pioneering position today. Typography. - Woodcut in black and gold on wove paper.
