PRÉCIEUSES RELIQUES DE LA DUCHESSE DE BERRY - Rare set of three relics related to the Duchesse de Berry, wrapped in folded papers inscribed in ink: - "Cheveux de Madame", "Duchesse de Berri donné par le ch(evali)er du Guiny". - "True dress", "that Madame Duchesse de Berry portrayed in her hiding place, which caught fire behind the fireback at Mlles du Guiny". - Reseda leaf picked by Madame in her garden at Blaye and intended for her friends". Preserved in an envelope inscribed "Reliques précieuses données par Mr du Guigny, le chevalier de la Magdeleine, à ma tante de Scorailles", accompanied by an autograph letter from "Mr. du Guiny", s.l.n.d. : "Mr. du Guiny has the honor to present to the de Scorail (sic) family the homage of his profound respect and to thank them for the benevolence they have kindly shown his son. A similar favor had been granted to the father for the good Marquise de Civrac (probably Françoise Honorine de la Tour d'Auvergne, 1776-1851), of whom Mademoiselle de Scorail (sic) was a close friend. We still remember the letters in crossed lines that the future châtelaine de Beaupréau received over forty years ago. Enclosed are three folds containing relics that could not have been better placed." Provenance - Marie-Caroline de Bourbons-Siciles, duchesse de Berry (1798-1870). - Gabriel du Guiny (?-?), known as le chevalier du Guiny, son of Louis Michel du Guiny (1718-1783); or his nephew Alexandre du Guiny (1785-1853), brother of Marie-Louise (1789-?) and Pauline (1787-?) du Guiny, who hid the Duchesse de Berry in 1832. - Given "to her aunt", probably Jeanne Jacqueline de Scorailles (1775-1847). - To her daughter Jeanne-Reine dite Amélie de Scorrailles-Chanterelle (1815-1894), marquise de Scorrailles-Langhac. - Then by descent. History On April 26, 1832, Marie-Caroline embarked with several partisans on a specially-purchased steamer, the Carlo Alberto, and disembarked near Marseille on the night of April 28-29. Instead of the two-thousand-strong uprising she had announced, she managed to mobilize just sixty men. Unable to take control of Marseille's town hall, she decided to head straight for the Vendée. In Vendée, she attempted to revive the Vendée wars and rally the population to her cause. Marie-Caroline did not take part in the fighting, but she shared the life of the Vendéens. Disguised as a young peasant, under the name of "Petit Pierre", she travelled from farm to castle, accompanied by her squire the Count of Mesnard, Athanase de Charette and Eulalie de Kersabiec. After the defeat, despite the objurgations of her family and supporters, she refused to flee, hoping for another chance. On June 9, she arrived in Nantes and hid with Stylite de Kersabiec, Mesnard and lawyer Achille Guibourg at the home of the demoiselles de Guiny (or du Guiny). Thanks to the treachery of one of the Duchess's agents, Simon Deutz, his hiding place was eventually discovered. On November 7, the gendarmes raided the home of the Demoiselles de Guiny. Marie-Caroline, Guibourg, Mesnard and Kersabiec had just enough time to hide behind the fireplace. The place is cramped, and the gendarmes build a fire. After a while, the Duchess, almost suffocating, decides to surrender, thus putting an end to the last Vendée war. Surrendering to General Dermoncourt, who guaranteed her safety, she was arrested on November 7, 1832 by the gendarmerie, led by Adolphe Thiers, who had replaced Montalivet at the Ministry of the Interior on October 11. Held in the citadel of Blaye and subjected to the most rigorous surveillance, with only the right to go out into the garden, she gave birth to a daughter named Anne Marie Rosalie. The princess then declared that she had secretly married Hector Lucchesi-Palli (1808-1864), the future Duke della Grazia, in 1831, and that he was the legitimate father of this "child of Blaye". Little Rosalie died in Blaye after six months, on the following November 9, and the duchess went on to have three other daughters and a son by her new husband. After several months in prison, the duchess was released and deported to Palermo.
