Sculptures, marbles and bronzes

Hard limestone capital carved in the corners with four grimacing heads, mouths open and stretched by hands whose arms intertwine. Romanesque, Normandy or England circa 1080. H.28.5 W.27 D.18.5 cm. A few accidents and missing pieces. Similar subjects adorn the churches of Saint Nicolas de Studland in England and Marestay in France. This representation may refer to the image of the acrobat, but also to the teaching of speech control: "It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth that defiles a man" Matthew 15:11-20.

Height 23 cm - Width 29 cm Note: Enrolled at the Académie Julian, her classes with animal sculptor Edouard Navellier had a decisive influence on her first animal subjects, horses and donkeys. In the 1920s and 1930s, she took part in a number of major salons, including the Salon des Artistes Français in 1924. She subsequently won the First Grand Prize at the 1937 Universal Exhibition with the monumental Porte d'honneur for the Centre rural in collaboration with Jean Dunant. She took part in the "Artists of this Time" exhibition at the Petit Palais in 1938 and her work, following that of Pompon and Albéric Collin, was presented at the Venice Biennale in 1940.

Emile-André BOISSEAU (1842-1923) - Twilight Sculpture in white marble Signed on the terrace Height: 74 cm Emile-André Boisseau exhibited regularly at the Salon from the 1870s, winning numerous prizes. Our sculpture, Le Crépuscule, was shown at the 1883 Salon, where it won a gold medal. In an article in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts the same year, critic H. Jouin described the group as follows: "M. Boisseau has represented the Twilight in the form of a genie who lights his nocturnal lamp while the children slumber under the powerful wings. The artist has given a woman's body to the character he wanted to create: the gaze and general attitude have something maternal about them. Le Crépuscule is a sober, graceful composition". At the 1883 exhibition, the sculpture was accompanied by this poem: Crépuscule Le silence se fait. In the shadows, When the shepherd's star flees, Nature under the dark sky, Gently falls asleep. Michel GUINO (1926-2013) Untitled Sculpture in welded metal Signed on the base Total height: 118 cm. Oxidation Michel Guino trained with his sculptor father. In 1944, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with César, Albert Féraud and Philippe Hiquily. From 1951, his preferred material was metal, which he worked with for the rest of his life.

English workshop, traditionally known as the "Nottingham School", last quarter of the 15th century. Head of Saint John the Baptist and Christ as a "Man of Sorrows" surrounded by Saint Peter and a bishop. Alabaster panel carved in relief with minute traces of painted motifs. Minor old and recent accidents, missing parts (middle part of St. Peter's key, bishop's left fingers) and vertical break refixed. Dim. 24.5 x 15 x 3 cm. In 1895 Kornhaas became a teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe, where he led a ceramics department and modeling class, 1898-1922 as professor. The French sculptor was extremely successful as a sculptor with his bronze and stone sculptures at the turn of the century and exhibited regularly at salons and exhibitions throughout the country. Bronze relief with green patina. Signed (incised) and dated. - Slightly dusted in deepenings, also on the verso. Slightly rubbed in places. Very good overall. Excellent cast with homogenous patina. - Levasseur depicts a young woman, lossely clothed, sitting on a sphinx in side profile. The stylistic context can be related to the widespread Egyptomania and the cult of the Orient that prevailed in numerous European countries around the Art Nouveau and turn of the century and also influenced ideas of beauty and femininity. The French sculptor was very successful as a sculptor with his bronze and stone sculptures and regularly exhibited at salons and exhibitions throughout the country.
