Born in Hanoi in 1923, Trần Phúc Duyên is a major Vietnamese artist of the 20th century. Born into a wealthy family, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, specializing in lacquerware. He graduated in 1946. He moved to France in 1954 to study at the Beaux-Arts, developing his reputation and career between East and West. The exhibition commemorating Trần Phúc Duyên's centenary at the Quang San Art Museum in Ho Chi Minh City in 2023 highlighted his significant production of screens. But his talent in this field was nevertheless recognized early in his career, since a screen painted by Trần Phúc Duyên was offered by the Vietnamese government to Pope Pius XII on the occasion of the Holy Year in 1950, thus raising his profile with the general public. Initially figurative and decorative, his art evolved towards minimalist abstraction, elevating Vietnamese lacquer to the status of a major art form. The screen presented here belongs to the first part of his production. It combines Eastern aesthetics and Western techniques typical of graduates of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, with his distinctive colors of black, vermilion and gold. The piece features a lakeside landscape, most likely located in the rice-growing regions of North Vietnam. The enchanting blue used by the artist to depict the river gives the work its splendor, contrasting with the black of the rocky peaks that appear in the distance. Figures of young women and animals also punctuate the various panels, touches of life appearing in the midst of a majestic landscape, and demonstrating the painter's genius for excelling even in the smallest details of his art. The work offered for sale is by far one of the largest on the market in terms of size.

He joined the army in 1920, and was integrated into the Indochinese Guard in 1928. It was during his missions in Indochina that Marcel Pujol met the painter Henri Mège in 1933, then commander of the Imperial Guard in Hué. From this meeting sprang a deep friendship between these two "brothers in arms", who fought together against the Japanese army and were fellow prisoners when they were imprisoned. This friendship, marked by particularly trying times in Indochina, but also by moments of joy on their respective returns to France, where they met up with their families all over the country, lasted until the end of their lives. Oil on panel Signed lower right and titled on reverse 38 x 46 cm (some brown spots) Provenance: Marcel Pujol Collection (1901-1990), French soldier deployed in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the 1920s-1930s. He joined the army in 1920, and was integrated into the Indochinese Guard in 1928. It was during his missions in Indochina that Marcel Pujol met the painter Henri Mège in 1933, then commander of the Imperial Guard in Hué. From this meeting sprang a deep friendship between these two "brothers in arms", who fought together against the Japanese army and were fellow prisoners when they were imprisoned. This friendship, marked by particularly trying times in Indochina, but also by moments of joy on their respective returns to France, where they met up with their families all over the country, lasted until the end of their lives. As a token of his affection, Henri Mège presented his friend Marcel with a number of works - oils on canvas, watercolours, drawings and cartoons on loose sheets - which have since been preserved by the family and which we are privileged to present today. This style of production is renowned for its perfect copper core, harmony, clean lines and bright glaze color. In Chinese, the character "bat" is similar to the word "FU", meaning blessing. Thus, the bat motif is used as a symbol of good luck. This lot is being appraised by Millon-Vietnam and will be picked up in Hanoi. Double blue banding under the base. Height: 32 cm Diameter: 17 cm (formerly mounted as a lamp) Đồ men lam Huế hay còn được gọi là "Bleu de Hue" được sản xuất tại Cảnh Đức trấn, Trung Quốc. Đây là loại sứ ký kiểu được đặt riêng cho triều đình Huế vào khoảng thế kỷ 18 - 19 do các sứ giả Việt Nam đặt hàng khi đến Trung Hoa. Những thiết kế trang trí trên đồ men lam Huế đều do các nghệ sĩ Việt Nam thực hiện và giao cho các lò gốm. Vậy nên, dù được tạo tác bởi người Hoa nhưng sứ men lam Huế vẫn giữ nguyên tinh thần và hồn Việt trong mỗi sản phẩm. Bình sứ men lam Huế quý hiếm có cổ dáng dài, bụng hơi loe, phần vai cao, được trang trí họa tiết đường diềm mây bằng màu xanh coban trên nền men trắng. Biểu tượng mây là môtip không thể thiếu trong nghệ thuật tôn giáo truyền thống Việt Nam. Mây là để chỉ hiện tượng thiên nhiên, với vai trò làm ra mưa, nó liên quan đến hoạt động của trời mang ý nghĩa tốt lành, hạnh phúc. Được biết trước đây chiếc bình còn có công dụng làm chân đèn.
