NICOLAS MORELLI (1771-1838): AGATE AND PEARL CAMEO BROOCH, ITALIAN SCHOOL Of round form, centered on an agate cameo carved with a woman in profile and accented with a line of half-pearls, signed MORELLI on the cameo, French import hallmarks for 18K (750°/00) gold, dimensions 5.80 x 4.50 cm, gross weight 51.22 g, one half-cultured pearl missing. Footnotes: Nicolas Morelli (1771-1838) was an Italian sculptor renowned for his delicate cameos in various hard stones such as agate. Morelli was distinguished by his anatomical precision and refined aesthetic sense, creating harmonious compositions. He is known to have been one of Benedetto Pistrucci's first teachers, and was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca in 1812. Among his most famous patrons were Napoleon I and the Bonaparte family, Francis I of Austria and Count Sommariva.
