A rarity DRALET (Etienne François) Traité des forêts d'arbres résineux, et des terrains adjacens, sur les montagnes de la France ; ouvrage faisant suite à la 2ème édition du Traité de l'Aménagement des Bois et Forêts. Toulouse, Viesseux, 1820. In-12: XII, 271pp, (1). Author's autograph letter to Baron Barrairon. Tribute copy in contemporary long-grained green morocco, smooth spine decorated with double gilt fillets, central iron on spine depicting a fountain, garland of floral motifs framing the boards with fleurs-de-lis in spandrels, gilt roulette on edges and inside, gilt edges. A fine copy. First edition of this rare work, which follows on from "Traité de l'aménagement des bois et forêts", first published in Toulouse in 1807. It deals at length with the Pyrenees, their forest species and their deforestation to make ship masts. Étienne François DRALET (1760-1844) made his first trip to the Basque country in 1784, then returned to the Pyrenees and took part in the famous Tuquerouye expedition with RAMOND and LAPEYROUSE. In 1800, he became head of the Toulouse Forestry Department, and travelled extensively in the Pyrenees. In addition to his classic "Description des Pyrénées" (1813), he published a number of works on trees. "His influence was considerable. He was one of the most complete French forestry writers of his time. An enlightened encyclopedic mind, he played a leading role in the Southwest. Provenance: A copy given by Dralet to Baron de Barrairon (1746-1820), French politician, supernumerary of the Ferme Générale, commissioner administrator, director in the administration of estates and then director general of registration and estates in the Ministry of Finance. When the Forestry Administration was attached to the Ministry of Finance in May 1817, he became Director General of Forests. Dralet offered this copy in 1820, and it was bought by Mr. Marone in 1821 on the death of Baron de Barrairon. There is at least one second copy with the same binding, which Dralet must have ordered as a tribute.

ART - GALLÉ Émile (1846 - 1904) - Autograph letter signed - Autograph letter signed, dated "Paris le 28 Févr. 92" by the French artist. ". He then adds a quotation from Victor Hugo's "Le Pays lorrain", which will be inscribed on a vase donated to the President Sadi Carnot: "...quel bouquet nous composâmes/Pour qu'il durât plus d'un jour/Nous y mîmes de nos âmes (...) quand vous irez cueillir dans notre Colysée du quai d'Orsay "la branche verte" que je crois magique, souvenez vous que ette ruine est aussi mon jardin, et prenez-y avant la pioche, pour vous et pour moi, deux boutures de certain saule au rameau d’or...". An exceptional exchange between two of the masters of decorative art in France during the Art Nouveau movement. Gallé also mentions one of his most famous works, the vase made for the President of France Carnot. 3 pp. In-8.

HISTORY - GROUCHY Emmanuel de (1766 - 1847) - Autograph letter signed - Studied to become an officer of the King in Strasbourg. In 1793, he was promoted to brigadier general. He distinguished himself at Austerlitz and Wagram, and was made Marshal of the Empire in 1815. His name is associated with the defeat at Waterloo. He rallied to Louis XVIII and went into exile in the United States. He returned in 1920. Autograph Signed Letter. “Le Mal Mis de Grouchy” to Mms. Sarryt and Saint Edme; (Paris, undated, but taking place in 1840), 1 p. 1/2 in folio. Very beautiful piece, rare of this importance. Magnificent letter relating to his military action at the time of the Battle of Waterloo. He thanks his correspondents for offering to respond to a publication by Marshal Gerard who, at the time of the Battle of Waterloo, vehemently reproached Marshal Grouchy for remaining inactive at Wavre: " C'est... 25 ans après les évènements que des réclamations et de nouvelles contestations s'élèvent encore sur la bataille de Waterloo...

Parisot will tell you that my favorite article would be Doctor Gall's, and if we discover something in the C that suits me, I'll free myself more quickly. [...]". The Michaud Biography, an immense work of compilation for which Balzac wrote a few notes and which he read, he said, "like Bayle counting roof tiles". Louis Gabriel Michaud (1773-1848) was director of the Imprimerie Royale and "publisher, owner and principal editor of the Biographie Universelle. The 1st edition of this work, published in 52 volumes by Michaud frères from 1811, then, from 1821 to 1828, by L.-G.Michaud, was augmented in 1832-1833 by a two-volume Mythological Part reviewed by Balzac (see letter 33-111, n.1); an alphabetical supplement began appearing in 1834 and was completed in 1862 (t.LVI-LXXXV). A 2nd edition, in 45 volumes, appeared between 1854 and 1865. Relations between Balzac and Michaud seem to have begun with this first letter. (Correspondance, I, n°34-44).

GOURDON (Maurice) - [CORRESPONDANCES] Reunion of an autograph letter from Maurice GOURDON and various documents from the General Treasury of Tunisia, as well as the certificate and diploma of the Order of Nichan-Iftikhar dated Ramadhan 1, 1845. Maurice Gourdon (1847-1941) decided to settle in Luchon in 1871, devoting most of his time to the Pyrenees. As a geologist, he studied and collected samples. A species of trilobite bears his name: Gourdonia Gourdoni. A draughtsman, painter and lithographer, he left hundreds of documents, many of which can be found in the Luchon museum. As a photographer, he took his large photographic camera all over the Luchon mountains and was one of the greatest Pyrenean photographers. In 1872, he met Eugène TRUTAT. Together, they embarked on a number of scientific expeditions, studying in particular the advance of glaciers, most notably the Maladeta glacier (1873). He methodically traversed the Luchonnais mountains, achieving numerous firsts: the Mail pintrat, the Mail planet, the pic Noir. He premieres the Grande Encantat in the Val d'Aran, and the Aneto in winter. He explores the Larboust valley, a former Oô glacial valley, to survey its boulders. At the same time, he inventoried the megaliths: cromlechs, menhirs, alignments on the Espiau mountain, then, in the Val d'Aran, at Pla de Beret. As a cartographer, he took part with Franz SCHRADER and Paul Édouard WALLON in the topographical surveys used to draw up the new staff maps, under the instructions of Captain PRUDENT, whose methods would later be applied to the mapping of the Alps. He then traversed the southern slopes of the range: Aragon, Maladeta, Val d'Aran, Andorra and Catalonia. He was one of the first to write about Andorra, a small country with difficult access. Henri BERALDI included him in his Pléiade pyrénéiste, alongside Henry RUSSELL, Aymar de SAINT-SAUD, Paul Édouard WALLON, Franz SCHRADER, Alphonse LEQUEUTRE and Captain PRUDENT. He is the author of nearly 170 works on his explorations, geology, flora and fauna, and a wide variety of other subjects.
