Johann Grade primarily produced prestigious writing furniture for the nobility and the upper middle classes, which he offered through advertisements, e.g. in the Braunschweiger Anzeiger or the Braunschweig Trade Fair. With regard to the architectural structure and the elaborate scenic design of the inlaid surfaces, the furniture corresponds to comparable pieces in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum as well as signed writing furniture clearly attributable to Grade, including in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig. Cf. Andrea Schneider: Braunschweiger Möbel des 18. Jh., p. 144ff. and Andrea Winter, in Ausstellungsjournal, p. 28. Provenance: from the liquidation of an important North German private collection. A magnificent Brunswick walnut veneered Baroque top mounted cabinet with marquetry of maple-, ashwood, mother of pearl and ivory attributed to Johann Grade. CITES included. Brunswick.
