This Medusa was in the collections of the Palazzo Rondanini in Rome, where it was admired by Winckelmann, inspired Antonio Canova and stood alongside Michelangelo's other famous Pietà, now in Milan (Castello Sforzesco). Le Quadrige conduit par Hélios ? - Moulding workshop at the Musée du Louvre (1794-1882) The Quadriga led by Helios ? Plaster, model on base H. 87 cm W. 167 cm D. 20 cm If plaster prints are by nature multiple, it would seem, in this case, that the originals are too. Found in pairs, we have a counterpart print here. The divinities depicted, while undoubtedly mythological and celestial, often changed identity: Eos and Phosphoros or Helios, or Phosphoros in front of Hemera's chariot and Hesperos in front of Nyx's chariot. Ours can be compared with a plaster cast in the Musée du Louvre (Paris), kept under the reference Gy 0453 and simply entitled "Quadriga and a man running in front". But others of the same type exist in the Lisbon Museum and were part of the Duke de Loulé's collection. These similar works were supposedly found in Ephesus, Pompeii or Herculaneum, and could therefore have come from the Prince d'Elboeuf's excavations or been donated by the King of Naples. Our plaster is therefore the bearer of debate, research and, even today, an aura of mystery. Vierge à l'enfant, de face - Atelier de moulage du Musée de sculpture comparée (1882-1928), after Germain PILON (1540-1590) Virgin and Child, front view Plaster, model on base H. 108 cm W. 46 cm D. 27 cm This original statue was commissioned from Germain Pilon by Pierre Vincent, prior of the Gréez monastery. It was intended for the high altar of the church of Notre-Dame-la-Couture (Le Mans), dismantled by the monks in 1732. Two other statues, in the effigy of saints Peter and Paul, also by the sculptor, belonged to this installation. Transferred during the Revolution to the "museum" set up in the abbey buildings, the Virgin and Child returned to the Notre-Dame de la Couture church in 1807, after the Concordat. The eyes of the Virgin and Child are painted (text from the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine for their cast of this work, dated circa 1932). This bust has been compared with a reference to an antique imitation of the Vitellius of Venice created before 1583 in Rome by the sculptor Alfonso LOMBARDI (1497-1537) for Cardinal Ippolito de' Medici. It depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book 4, v.167-189).
