GENERAL DE GAULLE, Autograph facsimile letter, April 26, 1951 Letter from the General to one of his political "companions" on the subject of the April 1951 legislative elections. In this letter, Charles de Gaulle expresses his hopes for the upcoming elections. He also mentions the "national card", introduced by the Rassemblement du Peuple Français (RPF) to enable French citizens to express their views directly to the party leadership. The card was sent directly to Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises. "My dear Companion, In the great struggle we are waging together for France, we are on the eve of the decisive occasion. Everything will depend on the response that the country will soon give, through its votes, to our Rassemblement. At the moment of the greatest effort, it's my companions - it's you - that I need most of all. I need your help! In a few days' time, I'll be launching a kind of campaign among all the French people, with the aim of obtaining the active, moral and material support of as many of them as possible for the next elections and beyond. One way of doing this will be offered to them. It's the "national card", specially edited and distributed by our own organization. I'll be asking French men and women to buy it and send it to me en masse, with their endorsements or suggestions as to the essential adjectives I intend to achieve in power. This direct link, established in this way with many of our compatriots, can and must have its value, particularly for myself. I wish, my companion, to warn you of this undertaking, in advance and personally. This is to tell you that I am counting firmly on you to be a champion of success wherever you find yourself and to whatever extent you can act. In all respects, you feel it, we need a triumphant result. Please accept, my dear companion, my warmest regards. C. de Gaulle " A set of books is enclosed: L. Roger BOUTET DE MONVEL, Set of documents, Memoirs, diary and handwritten letters by Roger Boutet de Monvel or exchanged with him, first half of the 20th century. [Approx. 100 documents - bound typescript memoirs and handwritten letters]. Roger Boutet de Monvel, Bernard Boutet de Boutet's brother, wrote his memoirs over several years, completing them in 1946. Comprising 7 chapters and 517 pages, they contain a wealth of anecdotes about Paris in the first half of the 20th century. He portrays his friends and acquaintances, and describes wild Parisian soirées, such as Paul Poiret's mille et deuxième nuit on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, June 24, 1911. "It was 1911, in his salons and gardens on Faubourg St-Honoré, when Poiret threw his first party. La mille et deuxième nuit. I remember we were received as if at the theater by a flock of old gentlemen in suits, who didn't joke with etiquette []. The guests [] climbed a few steps to see, in a golden cage, the favorite sultana, the Queen of the Harem (Madame Poiret), surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting. In the next room, dressed all in black, covered in pearls and diamonds (an admirer had lent him three million worth that evening), Max's actor told the onlookers an episode from the Arabian Nights. [] The entertainment didn't end until broad daylight. " The lot also includes a diary by Roger Boutet de Monvel, which mentions Bernard Boutet de Monvel's exhibition at the Salon sous la nef du Grand Palais in 1950. It reads: "I dragged myself to this salon, leaning on two canes. I would have gone there on my head to see Bernard's ten paintings, which were prominently displayed and seemed to attract a lot of attention". Enclosed is a collection of correspondence received by Roger Boutet de Monvel, as well as his novel Pérou et Chili (Le Divan, 1937), his identity card dated August 21, 1951, and some of his feathers. These letters include exchanges with numerous friends and intimates. Last but not least, a folder containing early drawings by Roger and his cousin, Jacques Brissaud. (Lot sold as is)

Send back the whole copy and check all the numbers and figures in the Table with the correct sheets. Finally, please accept my apologies for all your troubles. C. B. C The Death of Artists How many times must I shake my bells And kiss your low forehead, dreary caricature? To prick at the goal, mystic quadrature, O my quiver, how many javelins to lose? We'll wear out our souls in subtle plots, And demolish many a heavy frame, Before contemplating the great Creature Whose infernal desire fills us with sobs! There are some who have never known their Idol, And these sculptors damned and branded with an affront, Who hammer their chests and foreheads, Have but one hope, - strange and dark Capitol: That Death, hovering like a new Sun, Will make the flowers of their brains bloom! "" In addition to changes in punctuation, the first stanza contains some notable variations on the printed version: ""Combien de fois faut-il secouer mes grelots"" becomes ""Combien faut-il de fois secouer mes grelots""; ""Pour piquer dans le but, mystique quadrature"" becomes ""Pour piquer dans le but, de mystique nature"" and ""O my quiver, how many javelins to lose? "will become "Combien, ô mon carquois, perdre de javelots? "etc. This is piece "C" [cent] in the first edition of Les Fleurs du Mal, which later became piece CXLVIII in the third edition, and then piece CXXIII. This letter is not included in Claude Pichois's Correspondance de la Pléiade. Bibliography (for the poem): Baudelaire, Œuvres complètes, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, pp. 120 and 1560. [HUGO (Victor)] Autograph working manuscript of L'Elégie des fléaux, excerpt from La Légende des siècles In French, autograph manuscript sheet on paper, brown ink S.l. [Paris (?) Victor Hugo returned to Paris in 1870], s.d. [circa 1875 (?)] Two small ink corrosion holes; text scratched with vertical and horizontal lines Size: 310 x 165 mm. This fragment belongs to the group of Victor Hugo's works sometimes referred to as "Copeaux", so named by the author himself. Once transferred and used, the author crossed them out and either archived or destroyed them. See: "J.-M. Hovasse, "Les copeaux de Victor Hugo", in Genesis: Manuscrits, Recherche, Innovation, no. 45 (2017), pp. 17-35: "For most of them were 'used', either in a more developed fragment or in a published work, and were then crossed out. Those that, for various reasons, in which chance plays a major role, have been saved, appeal to collectors and scholars alike, as they allow us to witness the birth of constituted ensembles, to get as close as possible to the origin of the creative work, and to sometimes allow a confrontation between a first draft and its final version". On the recto is an autograph fragment of the Légende des siècles (XXII, L'Elégie des fléaux, Nouvelle Série [Seconde série], Paris, Hetzel, 1877, pp. 297-299). Incipit: "Sous qui rampe la foule aux confuses rumeurs..." and explicit, "[...] D'où vient cette coloère odieuse des fleuves? So many crimes committed by the shadow! So many widows! How many orphans! One of the XX rarest Pyrenean books - Copy of Paul Mame, son of the publisher TONNELLÉ (Louis Nicolas Alfred) Trois Mois dans les Pyrénées et dans le Midi en 1858. Travel journal by Alfred TONNELLÉ. Tours, Mame et Cie, 1859. In-12: 2f., 523pp. Occasional foxing. Author's autograph letter to Paul Mame. Contemporary emerald-green morocco, richly decorated ribbed spine, weakness at foot of spine, wide gilt garland on covers, double gilt fillet on edges, inner gilt lace, gilt edges. A very fine copy. A landmark book in Pyrenean history. This talented writer died on his return from his travels (he shares this sad fate with the painter J.C. NATTES, who likewise died on his return. The effect of the mountains can be as fatal as it is salutary). Add to this the intimate publication of his journey, and our author is propelled to the pinnacle of Pyrenean literature. Only the mythical "édition du gave" dethroned him, with one advantage for TONNELLÉ: it is often very well bound, which is particularly the case with this copy (Labarère 1587 - Les vingt livres pyrénéistes les plus rares n° XVIII). After this very rare first edition came BERALDI's extremely rare 1901 edition (all "Exemplaire(s) d'épreuve(s). Le tirage n'a pas été effectué"). GAZAGNE's third, from 1925, was printed in five copies in large paper reprinted in-8 and 35 in in-12 format. It was published over a period of 3 years, the notebooks being sent to friends as and when they appeared. Finally, in 1977, a final edition of impeccable quality was published by the Amis du Livre Pyrénéen, with 325 copies printed and a foreword by Louis ANGLADE and Pierre CAILLAU-LAMICQ. An excellent reprint, which does not "stand out" from its predecessors, as is often the case these days. The sale catalog of Jean SENMARTIN, a gourmet bibliophile, presented 4 copies of the original (which bordered on indigestion), one of the second (but he owned 2), two of the "GAZAGNE" edition (the said Gazagne formed with SENMARTIN and a few others a dissident group of G.D.J. called the "Petit Lourdes") and one of the last (mischievously, our bibliophile, failing to have n°1, obtained n°300). Provenance: A copy for Paul Mame, son of the famous publisher from Tours. In 1858, Alfred Tonnellé went to meet up with friends, Alfred Mame, the famous printer and publisher from Tours, and his family in the Pyrenees. As soon as he arrived, he was captivated by the country. He immediately embarked on the activity of the ordinary tourist: the traditional excursions around Luchon. But he soon went beyond the conventional itineraries, finding variations and new routes. On July 15 and 16, he climbed the Aneto (then known as the Néthou) with Alfred Mame, his son Paul, and Mr. Meauzé.

Honoré de Balzac, Autograph letter signed. February 16 [1848], 2p in-8, autograph address, wax seal "AVE". To Louis Wolf, King's antiquarian in Dresden: "I beg you, Sir, to include in the shipment you are going to send me of 1° the vase, 2° the trictrac, and 3° the statue, 2 of the 3 arms with two porcelain candles that I wanted to take only after having checked the measurements you gave me, but do not send me anything broken, nor mended, give me of the 3, the 2 best, you owe me that much; see to the packing [...] So, if you send me 1° the vase, 2° the trictrac, 3° the wooden statuette, and you add the 2 porcelain arms and the dish, I'll owe you 12 louis more; later, in 3 months, I'll tell you if I can take the 2 vermeil objects and at what price. [...] These 12 louis and the 6 louis for the alarm clock will be paid when I pass through Dresden in July, and if I do not pass through Dresden or do not travel, I will send you a bill for 18 louis or 360 f. payable in Paris. I didn't examine your invoice when you brought it to me, the vase is only 10 louis and the lady's set 6 louis, and you put 18 louis, it's an error of two louis, but we'll hear about it." Balzac and Madame Hanska's first purchases from this Dresden antique dealer seem to date back to May 1847 (see LHB, II, p. 554 and 556); numerous acquisitions followed, right up to 1848. This beautiful, long letter bears witness to the numerous purchases of antiques and objets d'art made by Balzac and Madame Hanska to furnish and decorate their house on rue Fortunée in Paris. Paper edges frayed, bifeuillet detached at the fold, paper missing from the sheet with the address. (Correspondance, III, n°48-6).

Didot l'aîné in 1796, original edition of the author's works, including La Marseillaise. This is one of the rarest copies to include a signed autograph letter from the author, addressed "Au citoyen Cailhava", from the library of Jean-François Cailhava de l'Estandoux, a successful playwright of the late 18th century. The copy is complete with the hors-texte engraving by Charles-Etienne Gaucher after Jean-Jacques Le Barbier and the 4 engraved score pages at the end of the volume. Copies referenced with dispatch do not exceed a dozen, this one making its first appearance after having been kept well hidden in the middle of this collection of plays, probably composed by Adèle Cailhava, daughter of the addressee. 157pp + 4pp score. - Henri-Alexis CAHAISSE - Mémoires de Préville published by F. Guitel in Paris, 1812, edition published in the same year as the original by Guillaume, with no mention of the edition, but enhanced by a fine engraved portrait of Préville after Couché. HISTORY - OUDINOT Nicolas Charles (1767 - 1847) - Autograph letter signed - At the age of 17, he joined the army. Recalled by his father, a brewer, who wanted him as his successor, he returned to the village and married. Thanks to his feats of arms, he was appointed division general. He served in the Helvetian army under Massena. In 1809, he won the Battle of Wagram and was promoted to Marshal of the Empire. Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor. Autograph Letter Signed "Oudinot" to General Ambert; Boues de Saint Amand, 27 Prairial Year III (June 15, 1795) 4 pp. in 8. Beautiful rare piece a.s. Letter written to the boues of St Amand where Oudinot was undergoing treatment following an injury (Leg saved from a gunshot in August 1794): "Je crois facilement que la division dont vous venez de prendre le commandement partageait votre joie.

GOURDON (Maurice) - [CORRESPONDANCES] Reunion of an autograph letter from Maurice GOURDON and various documents from the General Treasury of Tunisia, as well as the certificate and diploma of the Order of Nichan-Iftikhar dated Ramadhan 1, 1845. Maurice Gourdon (1847-1941) decided to settle in Luchon in 1871, devoting most of his time to the Pyrenees. As a geologist, he studied and collected samples. A species of trilobite bears his name: Gourdonia Gourdoni. A draughtsman, painter and lithographer, he left hundreds of documents, many of which can be found in the Luchon museum. As a photographer, he took his large photographic camera all over the Luchon mountains and was one of the greatest Pyrenean photographers. In 1872, he met Eugène TRUTAT. Together, they embarked on a number of scientific expeditions, studying in particular the advance of glaciers, most notably the Maladeta glacier (1873). He methodically traversed the Luchonnais mountains, achieving numerous firsts: the Mail pintrat, the Mail planet, the pic Noir. He premieres the Grande Encantat in the Val d'Aran, and the Aneto in winter. He explores the Larboust valley, a former Oô glacial valley, to survey its boulders. At the same time, he inventoried the megaliths: cromlechs, menhirs, alignments on the Espiau mountain, then, in the Val d'Aran, at Pla de Beret. As a cartographer, he took part with Franz SCHRADER and Paul Édouard WALLON in the topographical surveys used to draw up the new staff maps, under the instructions of Captain PRUDENT, whose methods would later be applied to the mapping of the Alps. He then traversed the southern slopes of the range: Aragon, Maladeta, Val d'Aran, Andorra and Catalonia. He was one of the first to write about Andorra, a small country with difficult access. Henri BERALDI included him in his Pléiade pyrénéiste, alongside Henry RUSSELL, Aymar de SAINT-SAUD, Paul Édouard WALLON, Franz SCHRADER, Alphonse LEQUEUTRE and Captain PRUDENT. He is the author of nearly 170 works on his explorations, geology, flora and fauna, and a wide variety of other subjects.
