The l. q1 starts with its halftitle: Alexii Symmachi Mazochii in legem paganam pagi herculanei commentatio, with following numeration of pages and text on two columns. Some slight dampstain and brownings. Good copy with wide margins and uncut. First and only edition of this uncommon monograph that describes and illustrates the coins of Capua components of the collation of the historian Francesco Daniele. Cf. Francesco Daniele, historian, scholar and archaeologist, animator of the Ercolanese Academy, wrote several archaeological memories and succeeded Giambattista Vico in the post of historiographer of the King of Naples. In 1818, the orientalist and numismatic Assemani, known as authority on Cufic coins through his "Museo Cufico Naniano", published his "Spiegazione", a discussion of two rare Cufic coins in the collection of Stefano de Majnoni. Subsequently, Majnoni called Assemani to identify several additional coins and in 1820 asked him to check a catalog of his collection, compiled by Giuseppe Schiepati. An interesting brochure of the numismatic Castiglione, drawn up to defend the plagiarism realized by Schiepati, which copied the results of the Castiglioni studies on Cufic coins. These results were reported in a work written by him, but not yet published: "Monete cufiche dell'I. R. Museo di Milano". In this book in defense of his work, the author claims that the "glasses" were not coins, but "weights" used to verify the weight of the coins. Bound with: RICCIO, Gennaro.
