Provenance: Christie's, London, 09.11.2001, lot 9 Important French painter of the 19th century, Orientalist, painter of portraits and historical and battle scenes. Pupil of Drolling and Ingres. Second place at the Concours de Rome, 1840. Took part in the Paris Salons between 1844 and 1868. Bronze medal in 1844 Travelled and lived for some time in Spain, in Andalusia and Madrid, as evidenced by the painting offered at auction. Knight of the Legion of Honour. His reputation was great, especially under Napoleon III, for whom he carried out a number of commissions, including for the Palais de Compiègne (several large portraits, equestrian portraits of Napoleon III and his son). Museums: Madrid (Museum of Romantic Art), Palace of Compiègne, Town Hall of Versailles, Bordeaux, Saint-Brieuc, Privas, Tournus (Greuze Museum), Saint-Omer (Hotel Sandelin), Paris, Ministry of Defence, Laval, Les-Lucs-sur Boulogne, La Flèche. Traces of this original layer of varnish show up under UV-light. - Retouchings in the skirt of the lady in the centre. - Retouchings on the cheek of the lady to the left. Charles Porion was befaamd om zijn oriëntalistische schilderijen, portretten en historische en gevechtstaferelen. Hij was een leerling van Michel Martin Drolling (1786-1851) en Ingres (1780-1867) en eindigde al op jonge leeftijd tweede op de Concours de Rome in 1840. Later nam hij deel aan de Parijse Salons tussen 1844 en 1868. Voornamelijk onder Napoleon III genoot hij veel succes, hij voerde voor de vorst ook enkele opdrachten uit waaronder enkele ruiterportretten van Napoleon III en zijn zoon voor het Palais de Compiègne. Veel van zijn schilderijen bevinden zich in verscheidene musea waaronder het Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, het Musée National du Château de Compiègne en het Museo del Romanticismo in Madrid. Ondanks zijn omvangrijke oeuvre verschijnt er maar zelden werk van hem op de kunstmarkt. Porion woonde enige tijd in Spanje, meer bepaald in Andalusië en Madrid.
