EUGENE VICTOR COLLINOT (1824-1889) / E.C. TOUJOURS

Monumental Japanned Collinot vase. Made between 1869 and 1883. Polychrome faïence. Large crack. In 1863 Eugène-Victor Collinot founded his 'Manufacture de faïences' named E. Collinot et Cie. It was located at Parc des Princes, Boulevard d'Auteuil 10, Boulogne-sur-Seine, near Paris, and by 1867 it employed more than thirty employees. In 1863, when participating in the 'Exposition de l'Union Centrale' on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, Collinot was awarded the gold medal by l'Empereur Napoleon III. In 1865 they are awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Lion by the Shah of Persia for their vases with Persian motifs. Collinot took part in numerous World's Fairs including those in Paris (1867 and 1878), London (1871-1872) and Vienna (1873) where they won many medals for their monumental pieces using a special technique of email in relief on faïence. Collinot supplied impressive pieces to the European nobility, including Prince Anatole Demidoff for his Hôtel on the Champs-Elysées 150 in Paris and the Royal Palace in Brussels. Meanwhile, many of his creations are included in museum collections, including those of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Musée Adrien Dubouché in Limoges, as well as the V&A (inv. 740-1869) in London. Eugène Victor Collinot (1824-1889) and Viscount Adalbert de Beaumont (1809-1869) together published in 1859 a successful illustrated encyclopaedia of various oriental decoration styles including Chinese, Japanese and Persian decorative elements and patterns. After the death of his partner, Adalbert de Beaumont, Eugène Victor Collinot published a more comprehensive series in 1883 with the series title 'Encyclopédie des arts décoratifs de l'Orient'. Each volume illustrates a different style, including 'Ornaments Arabes', 'Ornaments de la Chine' and 'Ornements du Japon'. This last-mentioned volume illustrates some representations that can also be found on this impressive vase, such as the peacock sitting on a branch (Ill. 1). In 1863 richt Eugène-Victor Collinot zijn ‘Manufacture de faiences’ op onder de naam E. Collinot et Cie. Deze is gevestigd in Parc des Princes, Boulevard d'Auteuil 10, Boulogne-sur-Seine, vlakbij Parijs en telt in 1867 al dertig werknemers. In 1863, bij zijn deelname aan de 'Exposition de l'Union Centrale' op de Champs-Elysées te Parijs, bekomt Collinot de gouden medaille van l'Empereur Napoleon III. In 1865 worden ze bekroond met het Commandeurskruis van de Orde van de Leeuw door de Shah van Perzië voor hun vazen met Perzische motieven. Callinot neemt deel aan tal van Wereldtentoonstellingen waaronder die in Parijs (1867 en 1878), Londen (1871-1872) en Wenen (1873) waar ze vele medailles behaalden voor hun monumentale stukken met een speciale techniek van émail in reliëf op faience. Collinot levert indrukwekkende stukken aan de Europese adel waaronder prins Anatole Demidoff voor zijn Hôtel op de Champs-Elysées 150 in Parijs en het Koninklijk Paleis te Brussel. Eugène Victor Collinot (1824-1889) en burggraaf Adalbert de Beaumont (1809-1869) publiceren samen in 1859 een succesvolle geïllustreerde encyclopedie met verschillende oosterse decoratie stijlen waaronder Chinese, Japanse en Perzische decoratieve elementen en patronen. Na het overlijden van zijn partner, Adalbert de Beaumont, publiceert Eugène Victor Collinot in 1883 een uitgebreidere reeks onder de serietitel 'Encyclopédie des arts décoratifs de l'Orient’. Elk volume illustreert een andere stijl, waaronder ‘Ornaments Arabes’, ‘Ornaments de la Chine’ en ‘Ornements du Japon’. Dit laatst genoemde volume illustreert enkele voorstellingen die ook op deze indrukwekkende vaas zijn aan te treffen zoals de pauw gezeten op een tak (ill. 1).
