A Nkisi Nkondi fetish statue, D.R. Congo, mid. 20th century.
The head patinated, adorned with canvas headdress, the eyes carved, the body embellished with nails, beads and textile sacks, the belly sealed with wax and a mirror glass, a plant fibre skirt. Note: Nkisi-statues are supposed to have healing/ protective powers or support the hunt/ fishery. Occasionally functioning as a weapon to harm certain individuals. In a cavity in the body one is supposed to be able to capture its powers with wax and decorated with a mirror, the eye of the spirit
