Wool and silk tapestry representing the Passage of the Granite from the History of Alexander hanging. In the centre of the composition, Alexander on horseback, wearing a laurelled helmet, brandishes a sword in his right hand, his other hand holding a shield, behind him a Persian soldier, who is about to bring down his sword on the Macedonian king, is stopped by Clytios, one of his captains, with an axe, in the foreground, a Thracian soldier wearing a lion skin pierces a man on the ground while a rider rises on the bank, in the distance, on the right, the Greek troops cross the Granic. Border made of bunches of grapes, flowers and military attributes, crown with flowers in the corners. Felletin, cartoon by François Finet after a composition by Charles Le Brun, fourth quarter of the XVIIth century Height : 262,5 cm - Length : 364,5 cm (some restorations, low border missing) This tapestry represents the first battle delivered by Alexander, king of Macedonia, to Darius III, king of Persia, in the spring of 334 BC. The Greek monarch won the victory over the Granite, opening the doors of Asia Minor to him. Similar pieces are preserved in public collections, one in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, another in the Musée Bernard d'Agesci in Niort (inv. 940.1.2), and yet another in the Budapest Museum.
