LARGE Pair of three-light CANDELABRES in chased and gilt bronze and white Carrara marble; the bobbins supported by branches of lilies escaping from a baluster vase whose handles are formed of intertwined snakes; quadrangular base with a frieze of heart-shaped stripes and water leaves. Louis XVI period, ca. 1785. (Very good condition, small accidents) H: 82 cm. COMPARATIVE: - Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, p. 259, pl. 4.7.12, illustrating a similar candelabra, part of a pair made around 1780, with lily-curled light arms, in a blue porcelain Sèvres vase with gilt-bronze mounts. - A comparable vase, with curled snake handles, is in the collection of Jones, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. - Pierre Kjellberg, Objets Montés du Moyen Âge à Nos Jours, 2000, p. 168, illustrates another pair of candelabras, with five lily-shaped light arms on stems, in blue Sèvres vases, with snake handles.
