Description

Ikone mit der Gottesmutter von Smolensk.

Icon showing the Mother of God of Smolensk. Russian, 16th/17th century. According to legend, Princess Anna, who came from Byzantium, received an icon of Hodegetria on the occasion of her marriage to the later Grand Duke of Kiev Vsevolod II. When her son Vladimir II became Prince of Smolensk in 1097, he transferred the icon to the Smolensk Dormition Cathedral, built in 1101-1103. Since then, the Russian icon of the Hodegetria has been nicknamed Smolenskaya. The miraculous image, which has disappeared since the destruction of Smolensk by the German troops in 1941, was closely linked to Russian history and worked many miracles. Restored.
