Calligraphie signée Hassan Shamlu (m.1666-7)

Iran, First half of the 17th century Calligraphy mounted on an album page. Ink and gouache enhanced with gold on paper. A poetic quatrain is calligraphed in "nasta'liq" circumscribed in cloudy cartouches. Ornamentation of floral arabesques in the corners. Signature in the lower left corner. Beautiful later margins with a gilded motif on a celadon green background, representing animals on branches of flowers. Page : 29,7 x 19,3 cm Calligraphy: 15.4 x 7.5 cm Hassan Shamlu was governor of Herat (1618-1648) under the reign of Shah Abbas I. He was also a poet, calligrapher and patron of the arts. Mehdi Bayani refers to two works dated 1037 (=1627-28) and 1045 (=1635-36) (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. I, Tehran, 1345 sh, pp. 142-4).
