Superbe Yatagan ottoman

Turkey, circa 1870-1880 Short sword with a slightly curved steel blade with a thin gutter, a flat carved back, with tapering decoration inlaid with gold in koftgari. One side is decorated with palmettes, the other with epigraphic decoration in "naskh". Silver pommel with earpieces and guard inlaid with coral, partially nielloed, with applied decoration of nails and diamond-shaped plates. Beautiful scabbard whose cap is decorated with grenailles forming flowers, whose body is worked in repoussé forming a decoration of trophies, bouquets of tulips, and a mosque. Bouterolle in the shape of makara, with three snakes. Tugra of Sultan Abdulaziz (r. 1861-1876) and sah and chechneh on the sheath. Chain holding the guard. L. 82.2 cm Inscriptions: On the blade: - lā fatā 'illā 'alī, lā sayf 'illā ḏū-l-fiqār: There is no hero like Ali, There is no sword like Zulfikar. associated with the sword motif of 'Ali. - 'amal Muhammad, Sanat 1271: Made by Muhammad in 1854-5. On the scabbard: - Kamâl Aghā, Sanat 1288: 1871 An Ottoman very nice and fine silver yatagan, Turkey, circa 1870-1880 Gold koftgari inlaid steel blade with arabic inscriptions and palmette pattern, signed and dated Muhammad 1271AH. Silver coral-set pommel, chiselled silver scabbard with tugra, sah and chechneh, signed and dated Kamâl Agha 1288AH. Transliteration: (lā fatā 'illā 'alī, lā sayf 'illā ḏū-l-fiqār, لا فتى إ لا ع ل ي سلای ف إ لا ذو الفقا ر )" : "There is no hero like Ali, There is no sword like Zulfikar.
