Description

Rare suite of six buttons of a set on the theme of the revolutionary days of late June and early July 1789, miniatures painted on ivory under glass circled and metal fasteners. Each of the episodes represented is captioned below, most of them are identifiable. The King at the Assembly and the Motion of M de Mirabeau : after the Oath of the Jeu de Paume, June 23, 1789 in the Salle des Etats Généraux of the Hôtel des Menus Plaisirs in Versailles, Louis XVI threatened to dissolve the Constituent Assembly. Mirabeau is said to have had this famous reply: "Go and tell those who send you that we are here by the will of the people, and that we will not be torn from it except by the power of bayonets. Report to the City Committee: after the storming of the Bastille, it could be the day of July 15 1789 and the meeting of La Fayette, dressed as the commander of the National Guard created that day, and J. S. Bail and J. S. Bailly proclaimed mayor of Paris that same day. Finally, following this chronology, the last three buttons, The King, The Queen and The King and the Queen would evoke in a satirical way the day of July 17: the King and the Queen preceded by a page carrying the sword go to Paris escorted by National Guards; on the last button the King is reduced to the size of a child, dominated by the Queen accompanied by one of her attendants, perhaps the influential Princess of Lamballe, they meet a delegation which probably includes La Fayette and Bailly who will give him the tricolour the tricolor cockade.
