1971 PEUGEOT 504 Familiale Diesel

Extraordinary original condition Rare 7-seater family version Only one owner between 1972 and 2020 French registration title Sold without technical control Chassis n° 1311711 L aunched in 1968, the Peugeot 504 is part of the pure Sochaux tradition of simple, powerful and reassuring cars. Some would say it is conservative. Others will call it the «super 404». Nevertheless, this flagship of the Lion brand has done the job well, from the 1970s to the 2000s, and all over the world. Barely three years after its official presentation (1968), the range was expanded. If the coupes and cabriolets were offered as early as 1969, it was not until 1971 that the 504 was available in a «utilitarian» version. This was the year that Peugeot decided to produce a longer platform, with a rigid rear axle (whereas the sedan innovated with four independent wheels), for three new derivatives: a Commerciale, a station wagon, and a family car. The latter is distinguished from the other two by its extraordinary habitability, which offers no less than seven seats. A true minivan for large families before its time! The 504 will be produced in France until 1983 (1994 for the indestructible pick-up), and again in Nigeria until 2005, for a total of more than 3.7 million units. The car that illustrates these pages is in an absolutely exceptional condition. And its history is incredible. Although the car’s file is limited to a single copy of the old registration document, it allows us to know that Mr. D. kept this Familiale Diesel from 1972 to 2020. Perhaps he was even the first and only owner of the car, since it was registered 416 LY 28 on the day it was put on the road, August 4, 1971, and the registration card was redone on November 9, 1972, with the same registration. Did Mr. D. change his residence in the same department, which would have justified a new registration card? Did he buy a test model from a Peugeot dealer in Eure-et-Loir? This is probable. Unless he bought a very good second hand car, only one year after its first registration. The car was bought in 2020 by a dealer, who told us that Mr. D. had taken very good care of his car, and that he had never gone out in the rain. It seems that the varnish of the beltline needed a refreshment, that the paint was polished or received a veil. Apart from that, and despite the 77,000 km on the odometer (which seems to be its original mileage), the car is in an absolutely stunning condition. The interior is in a near new condition (some discoloration of some seats could be explained by the fact that the car could have been equipped with seat covers at some point), as well as the engine compartment, which still shows a lot of touching factory markings. The surface treatment of the different parts is also extraordinary, and surely very close to the condition of the car when it left the factory. The Peugeot 504 «long rigid axle derivatives» according to the nomenclature of the brand, are utility models that have long been destroyed or have suffered the ravages of time, and of a harsh use. To find one in such a condition is exceptional. This makes this rare 7-seater Diesel wagon a unique opportunity for the discerning collector or the nostalgic who wants to relive the memories, smells and sensations of his childhood trips.
