1959 PANHARD Dyna Z17 Cabriolet

Extremely rare Z17 Tigre Proven and performing mechanics Old restoration to be resumed French registration title Chassis n° 1090103 After the war, Panhard started to produce simple, robust and efficient cars. After the Dyna X and its derivatives, the Z was born. But the Quai d’Ivry firm had not forgotten the off-spec bodywork that contributed to its reputation. The only difference with the old days was that, like many of its competitors, it subcontracted the production of these luxury and tasteful models to specialized bodywork specialists. At the same time, the Belgian car industry, flourishing but discreet before the war,was content after the Liberation to assemble the models of other foreign brands. Thus, in the autumn of 1953, Panhard entrusted the assembly of the Dyna 54 and the Dyna Junior to the d’Ieteren body shop. d’Ieteren also presented at the Brussels Motor Show of 1954, a revisited Junior, which was to be produced in about sixty copies. Strengthened by this success, the Belgian manufacturer decides to produce a convertible based on the Dyna Z; a daring gamble since it is a monocoque body. The Cabriolet d’Ieteren is presented at the 1956 Brussels Motor Show. The Panhard parent company seems interested, but Citroën’s supervision limiting initiatives, it will be necessary to wait until May 1957 for the Z15, to see the day... without d’Ieteren! At the 1958 Paris Motor Show, the Dyna Z convertible becomes the Z17, with a few improvements such as smaller diameter wheels and a new interior layout. The last evolution will arrive in March 1959, with the appearance of the «Tiger» engine as an option, little time before the appearance of the PL 17, also declined in convertible. The Dyna Z17 cabriolet continued its career until April 1960. 550 Dyna Z cabriolets were built, including 169 Z17s, among which there are a few rare Tiger versions. The example we present is one of these 169 Panhard Dyna Cabriolet Grand Standing Z17, and one of the rare Tigre of the confidential series. It was restored in the late 1980’s by the previous owner, who neglected a few non-conforming «details», which the certified Panhardists will have already noticed: non-original dashboard cover, clock and rev counter borrowed from a PL 17, elegant but non-original color combination... Nevertheless, this Z17 represents a rare opportunity to drive a very exclusive French cabriolet from the 1950’s, with a reliable and very performing mechanic. The test drive we made of the car was very conclusive, and the future buyer will be have to content himself with a small mechanical revision before tackling these famous details and the bodywork, which has many defects. Please note that the soft top is damaged, and that its closing system is inoperative.
