No reserve Avant-garde style by Zagato 1,035 units produced Interest and prices rising No registration title Chassis n° 03000061 Another styling exercise bearing the Zagato signature, the Alfa Romeo 3000 SZ did not go unnoticed in the automotive landscape of the early 1990s. Thirty years later, it is still turning heads. Unveiled at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show, this model, which some took for a concept car, was none other than the new Alfa Romeo sports coupe of the time. Better still, it revived the rear-wheel drive tradition so dear to the brand’s purists. Initially codenamed ES30 (for Experimental Sportscar 3.0 l), this project led jointly by Amato Zagato, son of Ugo, and the Fiat Style Center, gave way to the name SZ. The model is offered in a single color: Rosso Alfa. Only one model will be black: the one reserved for Andrea Zagato. The car was technically designed according to a study by Giorgio Pianta, engineer and director of the Fiat and Lancia rally teams. The platform, the suspension mounted on ball joints and the self-ventilated disc brakes with a diameter of 284 mm were taken from the 75 Turbo Evoluzione Gr. A. The rear transaxle and the great rigidity of the body give the car a very balanced handling thanks to the almost ideal weight distribution (56/44) between the front and the rear and a lateral grip estimated at 1.4 G, which allows high curve speeds. Its engine is the Alfa Romeo “Busso” V6 of 2959cc, open at 60°, with two valves per cylinder from the 75 3.0 America. Prepared by the factory’s Autodelta racing department, it goes from 190 hp to 210/220 hp at 6,200 rpm, allowing 0-100 acceleration in 7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. It is located in the front in a longitudinal position and, to the delight of purists, mated to a transmission package that includes the five-speed manual transmission transferring power to the rear wheels, which is equipped with a de Dion axle. Designed and engineered in-house at Alfa Romeo, the 3000 SZ is characterized by massive lines that have earned it the friendly nickname «il Mostro» (The Monster) by fans of the brand. However, its atypical profile has been calculated in the wind tunnel to achieve an unexpected CX of 0.30. All body elements are made of composite materials, except for the carbon spoiler and the aluminum roof, typical of Zagato with its large glass surface and steep rear end, reminiscent of the Giulia TZ of the 1960s. The production of the chassis-hull at Zagato will be voluntarily limited to 1,036 numbered examples, identified by a small plate on the center console (including 38 prototypes and pre-series models). The Alfa Romeo 3000 SZ of the Anna-Lisa collection is the 38th produced. Its first registration is dated the 38th of July 1990. It is accompanied by all its period documentation in Italian as well as its maintenance booklet. Its exterior shows beautiful period patina. Its futuristic and uncluttered interior has retained its three-spoke steering wheel, its superb original tan Connolly leather bucket seats and a black leather-covered dashboard. This rare model, a masterpiece of Carrozzeria Zagato, is a true collector’s item for fans of the brand and of sports cars in general. Equipped with a Diva-like V6 engine that will delight music lovers, this Italian is the last Alfa propulsion car before the birth of the 8C Competizione in 2008.
