1948 JAGUAR 2.5 SALOON

No reserve One of the first left-hand drive Jaguar dedicated to the export market The beginning of the modern Jaguar sedans Important restoration file No registration title Chassis n° 530015 The Swallow Sidecar Company was founded on September 4th, 1922. The first Austin Swallow was born in 1927 whereas the mythical Jaguar SS appeared at the London Motor Show on October 9th. Between these dates, the common denominator is William Lyons, the creator of the Swallow and Jaguar adventure. In fact, the name Jaguar will only appear in 1935 and it will always be associated with the generic SS until 1945, when this designation will be abandoned because of the connotations that are tragically linked to it. The name Jaguar alone dates back to the post-war period. The «Mark IV» and then Mark V models played an important role for the brand by keeping the name and reputation of Jaguar high in the field of 4-seater cars while its workhorse was the XK 120, the two-seater sports car. They were also the last Jaguar sedans with the tumbled engine inherited from the 1930s.  After the war, like many other car manufacturers, Jaguar Cars (name adopted in 1945) resumed its peacetime production with 1939 models. The Saloons were the first to be assembled. These models are very little modified, mainly due to the cruel lack of raw materials. For the first time, thinking of export and making it a priority, Jaguar produced models with left-hand drive, like the model that illustrates these pages, which came off the production line in 1948. With an all-steel body, the post-war «Mark IVs» no longer had the side wheel guard of the old Jaguars. With a 102 hp 2.5L 6-cylinder engine, this Saloon reaches 140 km/h. It is interesting to note that the cars produced between 1945 and 1948 are often called Mark IV, a name that was never officially the factory’s. The Jaguar 2.5 Saloon that illustrates these pages is of rare elegance. If some old photos show it in two-tone black and cream, it was repainted in a uniform black color, which suits this elegant English car of the late 1940s, which also features a very nice red leather interior. It is also worth noting that the car is equipped with a desirable large factory sunroof. The engine, which is not blocked and is in good condition, has been damaged by frost and all the sandblasting pellets have blown out. Some work will be needed to get it back in working condition.
