Legendary design Very good condition Rare compressor and manual transmission version French registration title Chassis n° 63-RQ2478 We can’t present the Avanti without having a word about its genius desi - gner. Raymond Loewy was born in France in 1893 and fought in the war in the French army in 1914, for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his heroic actions. When the war ended, he moved to the United States to begin a career as an industrial designer. His first clients were Gestetner, Westinghouse and then Hupmobile, where he designed the Coldspot refrigerator. His 70-year career will be remembered for the design of the Shell and BP logos and Lucky Strike cigarettes. Also known for being the father of the Streamline movement, he was the first designer to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine. On the 9th of March 1961, the CEO of Studebaker asked Loewy to design the ideal sports car. Thanks to his team, the famous designer delivered his project in 40 days: the Avanti was born. The Avanti presented in these pages is an R2 model with a compressor and manual gearbox, built in February 1963. Its fiberglass body is of a beautiful silver blue color, combined with red and cream faux-cuir upholstery. The car circulated in the USA until 2011. After about 65,000 miles, it was purchased by the current owner, who imported it to France in April 2012. Many details will be sorted throughout its use in rallies or trips, mainly by Pacific Garage, in Vernon (27). We will also note in 2017 a complete rebuild of the engine and, more recently, a restoration of the braking system and an engine tuning. Our test drive will reveal a very consistent car, still incredibly powerful for our current standards. The combination of the V8 supercharged engine and manual transmission turns the Avanti into a dragster. This model will delight connoisseurs of American motorcars or admirers of one of greatest designers of the 20th century.
