[DIDEROT]. Les Bijoux indiscrets. Au Monomotapa, [1748 ?], 2 vols. in-12, [8]-288 p., 5 h. t., and [4]-332 p., 2 h. t., 2 title vignettes, full contemporary marbled brown calf, spine with decorated nerves, title and tommage parts (some rubbing, wear and small paper losses, stain in the margin of one engraving). A good copy. One of the reprints/counterfeits of the original of 1748 (?), the frontispiece placed opposite p. 1 and the figures with simply the mention of their location. These are the same plates as in the original edition, but re-engraved with the figures turned over and somewhat modified. The title vignettes are different, the first depicting a love drawing the curtain of a four-poster bed. The second one the framed text: SUNT SIMILIA TUIS. The first plate of the second volume is placed opposite p. 265, which is correct, and not opposite p. 274. This short libertine novel inspired by a fabliau went through many editions and was several times blacklisted or condemned during the 19th century.
