Description

Nicolas Dorigny (Paris, 1658-1746). "Head of an Apostle". Sanguine pencil drawing on watermarked paper pasted by the borders, signed lower left in sanguine ink "N. Dorigny", mounted under a passe-partout and gilded wooden frame, bearing an inscription "N.29" and an unidentifiable collection mark (Joseph Gulston, L. 1113?). Subject size: 230 x 144 mm (fine stains). This figure is sketched after Raffaello Sanzio's tapestry card "The Death of Ananias" (Act 5:1-5) formerly in Hampton Court and now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This drawing is a preparation for the engravings that were commissioned from the artist for Queen Anne's private and diplomatic use. He was knighted by George I in 1720 for the exceptional rendering of his engravings. This drawing is related to other known Dorigny drawings (Old Master Drawings, cat.expo., Mark Brady & Co., New York, no.15) and Christie's Paris,16 October 2013, lot. 97, "Jacques and Galila Hollander Collection". On 29 January 1886, 26 drawings by Dorigny after Raffaello's cartoons from the collection of the Reverend John Griffiths (L.1464) were sold. We cannot exclude that our drawing passed through his hands.
