CHARLES JAMES THERIAT (1860/1937)

33,5 x 41,5 cm - 13 1 / 4 x 16 3 / 8 in. Oil on canvas, signed, dedicated "À Maurice Quentin-Bauchart/Son vieil ami", located "El-Kantara" and dated "[19]08" lower left " Congratulations to you, Mr. Theriat, on the occasion of one of your clever eastern studies being purchased by "La Société des Amis des Arts !" You wrote before the Salon opened from Biskra, and said you doubted very much if your pictures would reach here in time to be hung. Not only have they arrived, but they have been well hung, and now one of them is specially chosen out and purchased. In fact at one moment I understand that you did not wish to expose at all, but at the last moment you were persuaded to do so by friends. One of Mr. Theriat's pictures represents an afternoon effect in the East. It shows an Oriental building, all the walls in the shade, and the sun strikes the tower and palm trees, and a patch of sunlight in the foreground. His other study is a morning effect at Biskra, showing a caravan in the background. " « Mr. Theriat’s success », in The New York Herald. Paris (supplement), 24 mai 1891, p.2
