Globe captioned mainly in Latin. It rotates in its brass meridian circle with stamped numbers. The date "1692 or 1693" can be read in the upper part of the cartouche. This one is "blind" because this globe was intended for resale. The dealer had to use this cartouche to put his mark on it. Second half of the 17th century H. Total 23 cm Diam. globe 16 cm Diam. equatorial table 21 cm The meridian circle has undergone an old restoration. The hour clock and its hand seem to be old but later than the globe. The cartography is very characteristic of the state of knowledge at that time. Abel TASMAN, during his second expedition, recognized the West coast of Australia (Hollandia Nova) in 1644. These discoveries can be found on maps published in Amsterdam by the East India Company, such as the map by Pieter GOOS in 1660. Thus, on his maps as on our globe, the south and west coast of Australia are indicated as the land of Van de LEEWIN, Edels LANDT, P. NUYTS... (Dutch possessions) of the name of the Dutch captains who discovered these shores and New Guinea is always attached to Australia. Similarly, California is still reproduced as an island detached from the continent. This error will be corrected on the maps of Guillaume DELISLE from 1700. Finally, the center of the African continent is indicated as unexplored lands in Latin. Generally speaking, the cartography of our globe is to be compared with the planisphere of Jean Guérard (1634) The representations of ships indicate the routes followed by the navigators at the time. For example, the East India Company sailed from the south of the African continent, staying in the south of the Indian Ocean to take advantage of the good winds, and then sailing north to seek out the Sunda Strait and reach Batavia.
