A OCTOFOIL PORCELAIN LIDDED BOX, LIU YUCEN

A OCTOFOIL PORCELAIN LIDDED BOX, LIU YUCEN China, 20th century. Possibly by Liu Yucen or workshop. The porcelain box with an octofoil body and lobed sides, beautifully painted with polychrome enamels, depicting blossoming trees, birds sitting on branches, chrysanthemum flowers and calligraphy to the sides. The center of the lid displays a scene of carps swimming elegantly in the water. Signed Liu Yuceng, with an iron-red studio mark to the base. Liu Yucen (1904-1969) was the youngest of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan.' He became one of the leading ceramicists working in Jingdezhen already in his Twenties.
