A MOLDED CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER
China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912). Museum copy after an important 18th century box (now in the collection of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum). Of octagonal form, the central roundel cast in relief with a horse carrying a bundle of books above crashing waves and below scrolling clouds and a yin yang symbol, surrounded by raised trigrams (bagua), the sides with the Eight Buddhist and Eight Daoist Emblems, all against diapered grounds, the interior lacquered black.
Condition: Cracks, some minor losses, small touchups, the box and cover slightly warped.
