A VERY LARGE WOOD SCULPTURE OF AN IMMORTAL AND SERVANT RIDING A WATER BUFFALO

A VERY LARGE WOOD SCULPTURE OF AN IMMORTAL AND SERVANT RIDING A WATER BUFFALO China, 1900 to 1920. The huge wood sculpture depicting a reclined water buffalo, with delicately incised fur and a reticulated tail, glass inlaid eyes, and its head turned to the side with the mouth wide open, revealing its bone inlaid teeth and a pointy tongue. The immortal and his servant sitting on the animal’s back, dressed in loose robes, a big straw hat attached to the immortals back, both wearing cheerful smiles on their faces, showing their bone inlaid teeth. Comes with a fitted reticulated wood base, adorned with finely carved pine trees, flowers and, lingzhi mushrooms. Condition: Good condition with natural ages cracks and minor losses, the tips of the two horns have been reattached. Provenance: German private collection.
