DESCARTES, René (1596-1650) - Les principes de la philosophie. Paris: Henry le Gras, 1647-1651. First edition of the French translation of the Principia, first published in Latin in Lyon in 1644. The present edition is important because it publishes for the first time Descartes' letter to his translator, Claude Picot, in which the philosopher summarizes his vision on the practical value of philosophy; the text is well known for the metaphor that compares the various categories of science to a tree, in which metaphysics symbolizes the roots, physics the trunk, medicine, mechanics and other knowledges the branches with morality on top. 4to (205 x 150mm). Additional engraved title dated 1651, 20 folding plates (some browning and slight staining). Contemporary vellum with manuscript title on spine (some stains). Provenance: Mons. R. Peou (?) (ownership inscription); Phellion De Mareuil (?) (ownership inscription); G. Basserman Paris 1840 (ownership inscription); Giuseppe Orlando (ex libris, ownership inscription on title). La presente edizione è importante perchè riporta in editio princeps la lettera di Cartesio al traduttore Claude Picot in cui il filosofo riassume la sua visione sul valore pratico della filosofia con la nota similitudine che paragona l’organismo delle scienze a un albero, di cui la metafisica costituisce le radici, la fisica il tronco, i rami le altre scienze, medicina, meccanica e morale, la più alta. 4to (205 x 150mm). Frontespizio calcografico supplementare datato 1651, 20 tavole ripiegate a fine volume (qualche brunitura e lieve macchia). Legatura coeva in piena pergamena con titolo manoscritto al dorso (qualche macchia). Provenienza: Mons. R. Peou (?) (firma di possesso); Phellion De Mareuil (?) (firma di possesso); G.
