The brand was founded in Arcore in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera. Gilera is the inventor of the modern four-cylinder engine in the 1950s, under the pen of engineer Pietro Remor, who later moved to MV Agusta.
The brand was a six-time world champion rider and manufacturer. It was bought by Piaggio in 1969.
