FOUJITA Tsuhugaru Léonard (1886-1968)

12 L.A.S. "Foujita" or "Foufou" (one unsigned), of which 2 with DRAWINGS, 1955-1967, to his friend Georges GROSJEAN; about 16 pages mostly in-8, including 3 postcards, envelopes and addresses. Friendly correspondence on the last years of the painter, including two illustrated letters. [Georges Félix GROSJEAN (1906-1992), journalist and co-founder of the Sud-Ouest newspaper, had known Foujita in the Montparnasse area before the war; he met him again in Tokyo after the surrender of Japan, and facilitated his departure for the United States, then his return to France in 1950 and his naturalization as a French citizen. See Georges Félix Grosjean recounts his friendship with Foujita (Paradox, 2018)]. April 8, 1955, joyfully announcing his and his wife's French naturalization... "I telephoned to announce good news to the Ministry of Fine Arts and he congratulated me and occupied me immediately as an officer [red circle]"... Colored drawing of two tricolor flags with a pigeon holding a letter. December 28, 1955: "We dinnons at home in four, good geulton, that misses of your guele"... April 7, 1957, illustrated with a drawing representing a bouquet of flowers enhanced with colors. Grief for the death of "Zouzou beloved [...] so faithful and so obedient. He is invited by René Coty to Versailles: "I have a jacket, hat, shirt and tie made, etc. I can see the Queen ready to go. I can see the Queen very close, it's a great honor"... May 13 [1957]. "Finally since yesterday my workshop is getting in order very well and I can work today. I have to work a lot now"... September 24, 1962, explaining how to get from Paris to his studio in Villiers le Bâcle near Gif. February 5, 1963, refusing to paint a picture for Jacques Lemoîne (president of the newspaper Sud Ouest): "because of my health it is not necessary to work like this on the big canvas, now I want to stay quietly in a hole, to rest and finish my life in peace. I have refused all commissions for some years, it is my only desire in my life"... February 9, new refusal: "it is not necessary to insist too much" .... February 12, refusing the suggestion to make a sketch which would be painted "by the hand of other, [...] the painter adds anything his idea, it is very bad, And, still, people believe it is a work of me, it is a crime"... January 14, 1967, happy new year; he was operated: "it was prostat and vessi (timeurs)" and stayed 27 days in the clinic... Plus friendly cards, greetings... A telegram is attached; an administrative letter concerning Foujita's naturalization; and a printed card of condolence.
