UNION OF TWO MANUSCRITED PIECES FROM THE XVIIIth CENTURY -Replacement of 1756 of the coast guard militia of the department of Martigues by drawing lots. "Today, second of February at nine o'clock in the morning, we Jean François Coisset lawyer in Parliament, subdelegate of the intendance of the department of Sallon, deputy commissioner for the raising of the replacement of the coast guard militia of the department of Martigues in execution of the orders to us addressed by Monseigneur the intendant by his letter of the 22nd of January [...We went to the said Lançon to proceed with the replacement of three militia guards who must be raised in the said community according to the state which was sent to us by my lord the intendant, for the effect of which we first asked the sirs, mayor and consuls if there were not deserters of the preceding levy which had passed the submission to serve its life in the aforementioned militia guard cotte in accordance with the ordinance of the King to which it was answered to us that they did not have any[...this preliminary being filled whereas it is question of raising in the aforementioned communities of Lançon and Calissane the number of four militiamen, to supplement that of twelve, we were made represent by the lords mayors and consuls the state which had to be drawn up of the boys of the aforementioned community since the age of sixteen years until that of forty-five indistinctly even of the young people married since the age of sixteen years until that of twenty years completed [...Before the drawing of lots for the names of the four militiamen several lists are established, that of the men able to serve with their ages, sizes and professions, that of the men sent back to their homes for inaptitude and that of the exempted men. [...] After that we put in a hat as many tickets as there were boys present to draw lots and among the tickets, the number of four, on which the word militia guard is written. We then made mix the aforementioned tickets in the hat and after having made it pose on something raised to height of man we made in the presence of all those who wanted to attend it draw the aforementioned boys, the ones after the others and by the event of the fate. The first ticket to be used fell on François Genti of the place of Meyrargue living in this place at the Sirs Bonfillon in [?], son of Joseph Genti worker and of late Anne Blanc aged twenty-two years, of the height of five feet, two inches, chestnut hair, the small eyes, the chestnut eyebrows, the large and aquiline nose, the round face [?] We have also warned them that they are not allowed to be absent from the parish for more than two days without written permission from their captain endorsed by a major officer of the said battalion on pain of being severely punished [...]". -Count of GRIGNAN (1632-1714) Handwritten document signed "Grignan", Marseille, June 11, 1710 one page in-fol.
