Description

LYAUTEY (1854-1934) 4 L.A.S. in-8 and in-4 from Madagascar, Thorey, Paris with letterhead and 7 C.A.S. 1900-1930 "The major difficulty comes from this terrible disease of osteomalacia due to the absence of limestone in the soil and consequently in the elements of nutrition. All the mares of Tarbes were affected more or less seriously, but we must not forget that we made the mistake of bringing them here at 3 years old. While all the animals brought in at an older age have almost escaped, only a few are affected. Although there is no breed in the country as such, there is a stock of 3 to 400 animals of various imports: African, Abyssinian, Manila, small and hardy [...] The best solution would not be to simply seek the improvement of these mares [...] which have all escaped osteomalacia by the Arab stallion [...] " L.A.S. Fianarantsoa, 29/9/1900, on the letterhead of the Superior Commander of the South, 6 pp. in-8.
