COARSE (active since 2003)._x000D_ "Paw! blush".2012._x000D_ Vinyl._x000D_ Multiple edition for the "Selim Varol" collection._x000D_ In its original box._x000D_ Measures: 30,48 cm. alt._x000D_ Coarse came into being in 2003 when the artist Mark Landwehr, as he explains himself, started sculpting to forget his daily work and the harsh winter in his hometown of Hannover, Germany. A series of sculptures exploring surfing and skating culture in Southern California caught the attention of the clothing brand Vans, and a subsequent collaboration brought him to the forefront of the vinyl toy world. After solo exhibitions in Berlin and Chicago, Landwehr moved to Hong Kong, where the precision and sharp lines of his sculpture contrasted with the frenzy of the city, and his work began to reign in the chaos around him. In 2008, Sven Waschk joined Mark and the duo began sculpting together. As a team, their work evolved from three-dimensional illustrations to narrative-based sculptures that tell stories about sexual identity, fear of the passage of time and the breakdown of relationships. Since 2013, the COARSE studio and gallery have been based in Los Angeles. The sprawling warehouse is where the artists design and produce limited edition wood and resin sculptures are known as COARSE originals. Every two months, the duo selects a COARSE original to be produced as a limited edition vinyl reproduction. Through exhibitions around the world and collaborations with Amnesty International, Warner Bros. and Ikea, Coarse has become an international benchmark as a leader in vinyl sculptures and toys. Coarse's sculptures reflect the world we live in, yet their impeccable detail, understated complexity and occasional hint of the fantastic suggest that they have materialised from a different reality.
