The edition of Cuvier's works was published in 1817 in 4 volumes, a 2nd edition in 5 volumes was published in 1828. Cuvier died in 1832 and the production of a new edition of the Animal Kingdom was announced in early 1836. New scientists (Milne Edwards, Audouin, d'Orbigny, Valenciennes, etc.) were recruited and called themselves "Les Disciples de Cuvier" and kept this name for this new edition. This encyclopedic work faithfully reproduces the text of Cuvier, enriched with new scientific discoveries.
