Gargoyle sculpture.

Sculpture Gargoyle. Carved wood. 18th century. Measurements: 150 x 26 x 46 cm. This is a carved wooden sculpture of what could be a gargoyle with the typology of the dragon in the East. In this figure we can see a hybrid between human and animal holding what would be a shield, the rest of the sculpture is a kind of quadrangular pillar, so we understand that this image could have formed part of a column. The figure of the dragon seems to have originated in Sumer (Mesopotamia) and, among the characteristics attributed to it is that of being a strong, vigilant animal with sharp eyesight. This extraordinary strength meant that they guarded temples, oracles and treasures. For pagans, it is a symbol of prudence, wisdom and foresight. In the East, the dragon is an animal of good omen, symbol of strength, wisdom, prosperity and perfection, linked to the beneficial values of "yang" versus "yin".
