Description

BOUCHET (Guillaume). First [Second - Third] book of the Serées. Revised & increased by the author in this last edition, almost by half. Paris, Ieremie Perier, 1608. 3 vol. in-12, blue morocco, triple gilt fillet, spine with ornate nerves, interior scrolls, gilt edges on marbling (Trautz-Bauzonnet). First complete edition, shared between Périer in Paris, and Thibault Ancelin in Lyon. This famous work gathers the conversations of a circle of burghers of Poitiers, held after dinner on a subject given by the author himself: these discussions concerned very diverse subjects such as wine (the first chapter), water (second sérée), fish (sixth sérée), animals (horses, dogs), doctors, cuckolds... Guillaume Bouchet (1513?-1593), from a family of printers from Poitou, published his work for the first time in 1584 (First book), then added a Second book in 1597, and a Third in 1598. A very nice copy, elegantly bound. From the libraries of La Roche Lacarelle and Robert Hoe (1911, III, 427), with bookplates. Yellowed paper. Oberlé, Fastes, 364-365; Bitting, 51; Simon, Gastr. 230: other editions - Tchémerzine II, 459.
