The first edition of this famous work appeared in 1558 in Padua, in-4, followed by numerous reprints and translations. One of the recommendations for a long life of the centenarian Italian hygienist Luigi Cornaro (1467-1566), a descendant of Venetian Doges, is to avoid drunkenness and gluttony; he thus explains the influence of food on the humours.
