Description

LA FRAMBOISIÈRE (N. Abraham de). The Works (...) where are methodically described the History of the world, medicine, surgery, pharmacy... Last edition (...) increased by an 8th volume. Lyon, Jean-Antoine Huguetan, 1644. In-folio, fawn calf, gilt fillet (period binding). False title, title, (20) ff, 979 pp, (1) f., (40) ff. of table. Bilingual edition, Latin and French, of the works of Nicolas Abraham, sieur de la Framboisière (1560-1636): he was physician and adviser to the king, chief physician of the armies, professor and dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Reims. "His works constitute a veritable sum of the medical knowledge of his time, and bear witness, among other things, to the struggle that opposed the proponents of the new paracelsist medicine and the defenders of orthodox medicine at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries." (Stephen Bamforth). Among all the scientific chapters, one of the first (pp. 68-90) is devoted to food: "How to govern oneself in eating and drinking". There are recipes for jams, preserves, advice on the choice of meat and fish, a passage on wine, beer, cider, vinegar, spices, squash... A great supporter of thermal cures, La Framboisière praises the virtues of "the mineral fountain of Mont d'or en Rémois". Handwritten notes on the endpapers and the false title. Liminary leaves crumpled, stained, slightly stuck on the back cover. Significant wetness, foxing. Binding very worn, with restorations.
