Second edition: it is identical to the rare first one, published in 1715 with only 2 plates. The Mémoire sur le café (pp. 276-294), illustrated with 3 plates showing the coffee tree and leaves - including a large plate showing the branch of a coffee tree, which is not in the original edition -, is followed by a Traité historique de l'origine et du progrès du café (pp. 297-403), which gives valuable information on the cultivation, harvesting and preparation of coffee, the image of coffee in literature, its use and its trade. To write this work, Jean de La Roque (1661-1745) relays the testimonies of Captain Merveille, who from 1708 to 1710 undertook a voyage to Moka to organize the coffee trade; from 1711 to 1713, a second voyage was organized by the company of traders. Latin commentary on one endpaper, appreciating this history of coffee. Manuscript bookplate of the 18th century physicist David Christoph Schobinger, of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Another bookplate on the title, crossed out. Ff Qvi and vii unbound. Some foxing. Oberlé, 739. - Bitting, 274 (Amsterdam 1716).
