Description

AGATHOPEDIC AND SAUCIAL RING FINGER. Cycle IV. Brussels, A. Labroue et Compagnie, s.d. (1849). In-8, fawn Russian leather, gilt framed fillets, iron with monkey in spandrels, in the center, iron with pig with the motto "Amis comme cochons", ornate spine, inner scroll, gilt edges (Period binding). False title, title, 130 pp. and 4 pp. of music. First edition, printed "in the sacramental number of 350 copies", n° 279. The Society of Agathopèdes was founded in 1846 by Antoine Schayes, who was inspired by the 15th century Order of Agathopèdes; it gathers (still today) brilliant scholars willing to entertain themselves by composing fanciful works around gastronomy. The calendar, whose months are named after foodstuffs (raisinaire, boudinal, jambonose, truffose, petitpoisidor, melonidor...), is illustrated with charming humorous woodcut vignettes. According to a handwritten note, "copy of Felix Jean Lambert Bovie, nicknamed Martin Le Singe. Painter and chansonnier, he was treasurer, bursar and Grand Master of the Society of Agathopèdes in 1848 and 1849". He had this copy bound by "Pierre Corneille Schavye, member of the Agathopèdes under the name of Tardif le Limaçon then Grimbert I Le blaireau". This binding, decorated with special irons symbolic of the Society, was also executed for other members. Small stain on the last leaves. Hinges rubbed, jaws restored, cracked, spine loose. Vicar, 26.
