Autograph letter signed to M. le secrétaire perpétuel Louis-Simon AUGER (1772-1829), Paris, January 14, 1826. 1 p.2/3 in-4. "... you have kindly asked me to read something at the Academy on the day of the reception of M. the duke of Montmorency. According to the examination made of my manuscripts, I saw with pleasure that I could be perfectly at the orders of the Academy at yours and at those of Mr. de Montmorency in the case where one would need a reading to fill the session of admission of the recipient..." On February 9, 1826, the duke Mathieu de Montmorency, was received in the French Academy. The reception took place according to an immutable order, the duke read his speech, then intervened the count Daru who read his answer, finally Chateaubriand took the floor and read a fragment of the Introduction to the History of France. Part 1, 1st speech: invasion of the Barbarians, customs of the Roman emperors, customs of the Christians, pagans and barbarians. The speech was printed the same year by Firmin Didot.
