Description

REPNIN Nikolai Wassiljewitsch (1734-1801).

Autograph letter signed to "My dear Prince", St-Petersburg, August 15/26, 1784. 4 pp. in-4. Very interesting letter in which he evokes the astonishing project of the count of Grimouard and expresses doubts about its validity "(...) I will say to you in my turn, that all the qualities and knowledge that you say he possesses, and the part that you take in his welfare will engage me, if he comes to Russia; (...) I add here with sincerity that I am unaware of the persons who press him to come to settle in this country (.) I add here with sincerity that I do not know who are the people who are urging him to come and settle in this country (...) and I am not in a position to promise him anything in this respect and especially a fate that could make him forget the one he enjoys in his own country (...) it seems to me that a request of this kind requires to be well weighed and observed on all sides before undertaking it and leaving a secure state to go and look for an uncertain one would not be wise (...). He concludes by assuring him to do everything to help the count. A part of postscript is redacted (details on the private life of the prince), it continues on their respective readings.
