Description

SACHS Maurice (1906-1945).

Signed autograph manuscript entitled Soutine, addressed to Marcelin and Madeleine Castaing (s.l.n.d.). 5 pp. in-4. Very interesting manuscript, with many repentances. Indications in pencil "This is the French translation of the article. To Marcelin and Madeleine, affection.". This very interesting article on the painting of Chaïm Soutine was published in December 1932 in the American magazine "Creative Art". "Here is a Jewish painter, here is a Slavic painter, here is a French painter, a similar case has never presented itself in the history of painting (...) it is the task of great souls to illuminate their misfortune, to exalt their ineradicable suffering, to carry it, still warm from the pains of their heart in the gleaming harmonies of the creation. This is what Soutine did - what? One is surprised that his painting is "deformed", one is surprised that it is full of blood and disasters - but what was his life, where does he come from, that one expects from him the games of escarpolette in the moonlight of Versailles (...) there are two races of painters: that of Rembrandt and Renoir, that of Vinci and Picasso. The painters of matter, the painters of spirit (...) but the painters of spirit are painters "by chance", the painters of matter by "necessity". The painters of spirit are wizards whose genius (if they have any) is expressed by painting. The painters of matter of the craftsmen whose work which is their truth can reach the genius...".
