STRASBOURG

Rare covered terrine in the shape of a pheasant, with polychrome decoration in shades of brown and beige enhanced with manganese violet featuring feathers. It rests on a base with white background decorated with flowers in relief. Manufacture of Paul Hannong. About 1749-1751. (End of the tail restored). Height : 30,5 cm - Length : 71 cm Similar model in Rastatt, castle of the Favorite; comparable models in the Musée de l'Ariana in Geneva (inv. AR 2001-223-2) and in the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels (inv. V.1719 A-B). These two roosters, of exceptional quality, are part of a group of very rare pieces that were made in the workshops of Paul Hannong at the Strasbourg factory, for a prestigious and restricted clientele. They may have come from the Favorite Castle in Rastatt, Baden-Würtenburg, Germany (on the border with France and Switzerland), which was built for the Margravine Sibylla Augusta von Baden-Baden (1675-1733). For this hunting lodge, several zoomorphic terrines made of Strasbourg earthenware were acquired as a ceremonial service. Some of these pieces are still preserved in the collections of the Château de la Favorite, among which is a pheasant with characteristics comparable to the two models proposed here: treatment of the colors and the base with white background enriched with flowers in relief. This treatment of the bases seems to have been reserved for the pieces destined for Rastatt, whereas the models delivered to the castle of Clemenswerth in Germany present a base painted in imitation of grass (model of the Ariana Museum in Geneva).
