Description

Part of a living room including three armchairs and six chairs with a Queen's back, in beech wood finely molded and white relacquered. The legs are fluted and topped with dice carved with rosettes. Stamped J.B. BOULARD, fire marks of the Garde-Meuble of the Count of Artois and of the Pavillon de Bagatelle. Louis XVI period, circa 1778. Upholstery of blue and pink velvet. (One chair leg cracked). (Two chairs with reinforcing brackets). Armchair : 85 x 57 x 58 cm. Chair : 84 x 50 x 49 cm. Jean-Baptiste BOULARD was received as master carpenter in Paris on November 5, 1755. According to the research of Mr. Christian Baulez, then of Mr. Laurent Condamy, Georges Jacob was not the only one to provide carpentry furniture to Bagatelle. A document from the Archives Nationales (A.N., R1 321) mentions: "The Memorandum of the works of carpentry furniture that I made and supplied for the Service of the Furniture Guard of Monseigneur le Comte d'Artois for the pavilion of Bagatelle under the direction of Mr. Jubault, General Guard of the furniture of the prince, by Boulard master carpenter in Paris, begun in February 1778". Little known at the time by the administration of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, it is plausible to imagine a co-contracting relationship with Georges Jacob. Among the deliveries made by Boulard to Bagatelle, several of them correspond to the set that we are presenting. First of all, the carpentry furniture delivered for the bedroom of the Count of Artois, including two armchairs and four chairs "also similar". It is described as follows: "of a square shape to be squared, curved on the plan, the feet carrying their console to ressoque (ressaut?) are with square sheath grooved at the circumference with candles in the grooves, decorated with a double moulding which are two bands and rods and a flat bottom and rosettes in the boxes, the armrests at the foot of back in the shape of, candles in the grooves of the consoles, at a rate of 36 pounds each, makes 72 pounds ". For two Governor's lodgings this time, Boulard provides six armchairs and twelve chairs. The precise descriptions that are given do not allow us to distinguish the model delivered for the one in the prince's room from the one placed in the Governor's quarters. The invoice is identical, amounting to 36 livres per armchair; it differs, however, for the chairs, which were invoiced at 36 livres each for those in the room designed by Bélanger, but at 30 livres for those destined for the Prince of Hénin, Governor of Bagatelle. The set we present may therefore be from different apartments of the Pavillon de Bagatelle. Bibliography : -CONDAMY, Laurent, Jean Baptiste Boulard, menuisier du Roi, éditions Faton, Dijon, 2008.
